It pains me to say it, but the title of the organization doesn't say it has to protect human rights. One could argue that China et. al. have a sincere interest in human rights...just not the protection thereof. Rather the reverse.

You may be right there. When the UN puts nations like the Sudan on the HRC, one has to wonder what, exactly, the purpose of the panel is. It's certainly not to DEFEND human rights!

Considering that's the popular Chinese perspective of the United States, they probably view the United States on the UN Human Rights Council as hypocritical as well. Arguably, the entire rest of the world feels the same way about the United States.

I think the "big 3" are defining them. I am sure they know what human rights are, they just don't care if the non-elite get to enjoy them!

I don't think of it so much as irony as I do it being the punchline of a very bad joke.

The issue isn't whether China views us as violators of Human Rights. The issue is who is right. We have a two hundred plus year history of gradual but significant improvement. China has a seven thousand year history of whatever ruling class has clawed its way to power treating everybody else like farm animals.
Most of what is wrong with international politics today can be traced to people unable to see the distinction, much less pick one over the other. The United Nations in the home hive of such idiots. It should be disbanded, and the building torn down and replaced by something more beneficial to society.
Such as a brothel.
